04.11.2003 Overzealous efforts to stop NSW Premier Bob Carr giving the Sydney Peace Prize to Palestinian MP Hanan Ashrawi had probably damaged the Jewish community's standing, a senior Jewish leader said.
Mr Carr will present the prize to Dr Ashrawi on Thursday in the face of opposition from Sydney's Jewish community, which regards her an inappropriate recipient for a peace prize.
But NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president Stephen Rothman said Mr Carr's judgement should be respected and acknowledges some Jews had overstepped the mark in their lobbying.
"There's been methods of approach by one or two people, who are not part of the leadership of the community that probably have not done the community much good," Mr Rothman told ABC radio.
Efforts by some Jews to "heavy" members of the Sydney Peace Foundation and demand Mr Carr withdraw his offer to present the award were "unfortunate and probably inappropriate, but I don't criticise them for that", he said.
Mr Rothman said the board generally agreed with the views expressed in a letter from Colonel Mike Kelly, an adviser with coalition forces in Iraq.
