Hundreds of people turned out in Sydney yesterday to protest against Israel's construction of a barrier on the West Bank, describing it as a fundamental breach of human rights.
In one of a series of rallies across Australia yesterday, demonstrators marched without incident from the Town Hall to the US consulate in Martin Place.
Speakers including the Greens senator Kerry Nettle said the barrier would devastate the livelihood of the Palestinian people.
Some likened it to the apartheid era in South Africa.
There were about 60 police on hand, including some who provided an escort along George Street. Police said they were impressed with how peaceful the rally was, reporting no threats of violence or arrests and only minor traffic delays.
