An Orthodox and a Progressive school in Sydney are to join forces in an unprecedented move that will streamline the number of Sydney Jewish dayschools from five to four.
The amalgamation of Emanuel School and Mount Sinai College will come into effect in 2005.
But the proposal is causing ructions among sections of the Orthodox community, with Maroubra Synagogue Rabbi Haim Perez blasting the move in shul last Saturday (see report, page 3).
Emanuel, which runs from Kindergarten to Year 12, has a Progressive ethos while Mount Sinai, which only runs up to Year 6, has an Orthodox philosophy; the new school will cater for all students from Kindergarten to Year 12.
In gestation for two years, the innovative venture has been prompted in large measure by demographic shifts
