Simon Wiesenthal Centre applied to world leaders for they take the lead in a new international effort to legally designate suici

                  04.01.2004

Simon Wiesenthal Centre applied to world leaders George W. Bush, President of the United States, Tony Blair, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Chancellor of Germany, Jacques Chirac, President of France, with the petition for they take the lead in a new international effort to legally designate suicide bombings, whoever the perpetrators and wherever the victims, as crimes against humanity.
Everyone is invited to sign the petition, which Internet-address is www.wiesenthal.com/social/press/pet1.cfm?petid=97. The text reads as follows:
I write to you to commend your steadfastness in leading and pursuing the war against terrorism. Through word and deed you have shown people the world over that evil deeds will not go unanswered.
As you know in recent months, the scourge of international terrorism and suicide bombings have reached far beyond the United States and Israel and targeting innocent civilians in India, the Philippines and in the Arab and Moslem world from Morocco to Saudi Arabia and Iraq, to Indonesia and Turkey.
It is clear that the world urgently needs to add a specific legal mechanism that will help bring to the bar of justice, not only the perpetrators of these horrors, but the organizations that train, sponsor, and inspire young people to embrace a culture of death. That is why I am turning to you to urge that you take the lead in establishing any suicide bombing as a crime against humanity.
Just last week, a Simon Wiesenthal Center delegation raised this issue at a private audience at the Vatican with His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Just 24 hours following our meeting the Pontiff told participants in a Catholic-Islamic meeting that, "I appeal to you, and to all men and women of good will, to join your voices with mine as I repeat that the holy name of God must never be used to incite violence or terrorism, to promote hatred or exclusion."
I now turn to you to take the lead in a new international effort to legally designate suicide bombings, whoever the perpetrators and wherever the victims, as crimes against humanity.
