Australian tourists are returning to Israel, according to figures from the Israeli Ministry of Tourism.
Dr David Beirman, director of the Sydney-based Israel Tourism Office (Australia/New Zealand), told the AJN that Australian tourism figures for the first quarter of 2004 are 92 per cent up on the same period in 2003. New Zealand figures are up 55 per cent.
He said 2945 Australians travelled to Israel between January 1 and March 31 this year, 1404 more than for the corresponding period last year.
Dr Beirman conceded that the hike in visitors comes from a low base, as the Iraq war kept travellers from the area last year.
