Newspapers in Germany are reporting that a comprise has been found to allow for a reform of the country's immigration system, notably with respect to Jewish migrants. According to the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten", the Central Welfare Office of the Central Council of Jews in Germany will be in charge of examining whether or not applicants can rightfully claim to be Jewish and thus get a residence permit for Germany. The Welfare Office will also set up an immigration agency which is mandated to establish whether or not applicants are likely to integrate into German society. The Jewish community has been seeking changes to the country's new immigration law that would allow 270,000 pending applications by Jews living in the former Soviet Union countries to be handled according to the previous immigration law. Since 1990, Jews from Central and Eastern European states are allowed to settle in Germany, in a gesture to victims of the Nazi regime and their heirs.
