For the first time, Jews and Muslims in the Australian city of Melbourne have shared a formal dinner on the occasion of the Islamic breaking of the Ramadan fast. The event's organizer Orhan Cicek said he thought it was the first time in Australia that a Muslim group had invited Jews to such an event. The dinner, for about 80 Muslims and 80 Jews, was part of the year-long Building Bridges project run by the (Muslim) Australian Intercultural Society and (Jewish) Anti-Defamation Commission. The project has brought Muslim and Jewish families, both observant and less religious, together for meals and religious events. In April, Muslims went to celebrate the Jewish Passover, and now the invitation was returned. Rabbi Fred Morgan said "Building Bridges" was a historic project, and last night's dinner was another step.
