09.12.2005 Following is a statement released today by Israel Singer, chairman of WJC in response to Iran's President's Comments about the Holocaust:
"It is quite clear that Ahmadinejad wants to whip up sentiments against Israel, against Jews, against the entire civilized world and therefore it is important that the moderate leaders in the Muslim world, in particular the Organization of the Islamic Conference, should immediately condemn what Ahmadinejad has said.
"The statement of the Iranian president shows that there is a need for engaging in dialogue with Muslims -- the majority of whom are moderate and reasonable people. The World Jewish Congress will take a lead on this matter. We have asked the German government to support our efforts in bringing together leaders of different cultural and religious backgrounds, to sit down together and discuss common initiatives. We need the dialogue so that extremists like Ahmadinejad will be isolated and become a small, powerless minority."
On Sunday in Bilbao, Spain, the World Jewish Congress will take part in an International Congress on intercultural and inter- religious dialogue.
