European Union hosts high-level roundtable meeting of religious leaders

Jewish leaders have attended a high-profile meeting sponsored by the European Union. Monday's meeting also included Christian and Muslim leaders from across Europe, as well as the Dalai Lama. Fifteen delegates were invited to Brussels by European Commission president Barroso and the current holder of the EU's presidency, Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel to discuss the role of religious communities in the promotion of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights across Europe. The event follows a similar gathering in July of religious leaders at the European Commission, which is the EU's executive, but this was the first time that such an initiative also had the support of the EU presidency.
