Jewish Congress hails World Religious Summit
06.07.2006 Head of the Policy Council of the World Jewish Congress Israel Singer has hailed the results of the World Religious Summit and the attention paid to the event by the Russian authorities.
Participants in the summit searched for common decisions, rather than for struggle. These are authoritative people who adhere to moderate views. The fact that muftis and rabbis were willing to gather together is a cause for optimism, he told Interfax.
The summit gives hope for finding ways to resolve worldwide problems provided that moderate positions are maintained in the future, he said.
It was surprising to learn that the Russian authorities are interested in religion, Singer said. Some Americans consider religion as the main factor for clashes of civilizations, while Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks of the necessity of a dialogue between civilizations and of the influence of spiritual leaders, he said.
From this point of view, Russia has a more advantageous position than many European states, the citizens of which consider their states secular and atheist, Singer said.
