Shanghai as WWII safe haven for Jews exhibition opens in Warsaw
26.10.2006 An exhibition of photos showing Jews seeking refuge in Shanghai from Nazi persecution opened in Warsaw on 24 October. Yin Yicui, deputy secretary of the Chinese Communist Party's Shanghai branch, who was at the event's opening in the Polish capital, said she expected the exhibition to serve as a reminder to people around the world of those dark times. She said the photos would urge the world to avoid a return to those times and encourage people to cherish peace and build a harmonious world. Shanghai residents helped house more than 30,000 Jewish refugees before and during World War II. After 1938, Shanghai was the only city in the world that accepted Jews without a visa, and after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, there were 25,000 Jewish people in the city. The exhibition of more than 150 photographs, entitled "Shanghai: A Haven for Holocaust Victims", was warmly received. A Polish Holocaust survivor said Shanghai saved the world during the war, citing a line from the Bible that says saving a life is like saving the world. After three weeks in Warsaw, the exhibition will go on show in four other Polish cities.
