World Congress of Bukharian Jews Hosts International Convention.
14.02.2007 The World Congress of Bukharian Jews, headed by its Chairman Lev Leviev, convened in Israel from March 17th through 20th. The event involved representatives of Bukharian Jewish Communities in Austria, the USA, Germany, the Former Soviet Union, Israel, as well as other countries.
On Sunday, the main session took place in one of the largest halls of Tel Aviv "Heichal Hatarbut". Designed to seat 3,000 persons, it was completely full. Participants attended talks by Israeli Education Minister Meir Shitrit, World Congress of Bukharian Jews Chairman Lev Leviev, CIS Rabbinical Alliance Chairman Berel Lazar and many other respected personalities.
On behalf of the World Congress of Bukharian Jews, Lev Leviev presented a cheque for 2,857,000 shekels to be distributed as scholarships among 1012 Bukharian students engaged in studies in Israel. The conference program included shows by such well-known Israeli performers as Yehuda Saado and Chai Davidov.
On Monday, participants headed to the Ohr Avner Chabad Educational Complex in Kfar Sitrin to take part in the convention of Bukharian rabbis, which involved more than 1,000 rabbis from across the world. Among them were Chief Sephardic Rabbi of Israel Shlomo Adar, Chief Rabbi of the World Bukharian Community Pinchas Hacohen Rabin, Chief Rabbi of Uzbekistan David Gurevich and many other influential religious leaders.
On this occasion, Lev Leviev delivered scholarships to 800 outstanding students, who have devoted themselves to the study of Torah. The total sum of these scholarships comprised close to 500,000 shekels. Mr. Leviev wished the students good luck explaining that, since the Congress believes that supporting youth education is its primary concern, it had decided to allot a sum of money as scholarships for yeshiva students.
"My late father, Reb Avner Leviev, just like my grandfather, devoted himself to spreading Jewish knowledge and traditions. He worked together with Chabad Lubavitch emissaries in the cities of the Soviet Union that were inhabited by Bukharian Jews," said Lev Leviev. "With the same devotion in our hearts, we opened the "Ohr Avner" network of educational institutions and we can see here today more than 1,000 young rabbinical students representing the Bukharian Community," he added.
Afterwards, participants in the convention took part in discussions dedicated to different aspects of the life of Bukharian communities around the world.
