Jewish community fears increase assaults.
01.06.2007 Jewish leaders fear assaults on Jews are on the rise after a man wearing a yarmulke was assaulted and abused by a gang on a Melbourne train this week.
Danny Pollak, 27, was hit over the head with a rolled up newspaper, and ridiculed for wearing the Jewish skull cap during Tuesday's attack by six youths on the train from North Melbourne to Flinders Street Station.
The incident followed another last October in which a man also wearing a yarmulke was attacked, abused and punched in the face as he walked with his children in Caulfield.
Mr Pollak said he had been shaken by the attack on him but vowed to continue to wear the yarmulke that identifies his faith.
Mr Pollak said he had been a victim of anti-semitic remarks in the past, but had never been physically attacked before.
After being surrounded by the youths, Mr Pollak fled to the end of the carriage to escape. "I'm more cautious about train travel now and I'm only happy to get on the train when the carriage is full because there is security in numbers," he said.
Jewish Anti-Defamation Commission spokesman Manny Waks said verbal and physical attacks on Jews in Australia were on the increase.
Mr Waks said Australia was the home for the largest number of Holocaust victims outside of Israel and those older people were feeling more anxious and vulnerable.
Police said on Friday they were still working their way through footage from the train in an effort to identify Mr Pollak's attackers.
In the incident last October, Menachem Vorchheimer was walking along a road in Caulfield with his two children when he was abused and attacked by football players from Barwon Heads who had just past him in a minibus.
He was punched in the face and had his yarmulke taken, then ran after and caught the bus and confronted its passengers.
One man has since been fined $1,000 for using insulting words in a public place while two others are due to appear in court next month.
