                  Israeli lawmakers target minority rhetoric.

                  07.06.2007

An Israeli Knesset member says that a bill allowing the dismissal of any lawmaker who publicly denies the existence of Israel as a Jewish state is "a disgrace."
The measure, proposed by Knesset member Esterina Tartman, passed a preliminary reading in a joint legislative assembly Wednesday in Jerusalem by a vote of 34-22, Ha'aretz reported.
The measure would allow Israel's parliament, the Knesset, to dismiss a member who denied "the existence of the state of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state" in public, made statements inciting racism, or expressed "support for armed battles by an enemy state or a terror organization against the state of Israel."
Thirty members would have to propose dismissal and the majority of the 80-seat Knesset would have to approve ousting a member because of their rhetoric.
Likud Party parliament member Michael Eitan said that the vote was "a blow to Israeli democracy and to minority rights by the left as well as the right, and a mark of disgrace for the Knesset."
