Australia's peak Jewish body rejoins World Jewish Congress.

                  18.06.2007

AUSTRALIA'S peak Jewish body, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), has rejoined the World Jewish Congress (WJC) following the election of American cosmetics mogul Ronald Lauder as the new president of the world body.
The ECAJ originally withdrew its membership of the WJC last year amid concerns over the financial practices of the WJC as well as over its refusal to withdraw a $7.5-million libel suit against Australian Jewish community icon Isi Leibler, at the time, a trenchant critic of the WJC.
But following talks in New York over the weekend between Lauder and ECAJ president Grahame Leonard, the Australian body opted to rejoin the WJC fold.
The ECAJ strongly supported the election of Lauder, who defeated Mendel Kaplan of South Africa by 59 votes to 17.
Kaplan was seen as too closely connected to the former WJC leadership that included disgraced former WJC chair Rabbi Israel Singer, who was sacked from his position after revelations of financial improprieties.
