Jewish Claims Conference (JCC) negotiated for more money for Holocaust survivors.

                  29.06.2007

The decision to raise the subsidies to Holocaust survivors from Central and East Europe that Germany pays out is "good news," Tomas Kraus, Czech Jewish Communities Federation secretary, told CTK today.
"Not only living standards, but also the costs of living have increased since the 1990s when the compensation level was being set in the 1990s on the basis of the then consumer basket," Kraus said.
The agreement on higher subsidies was reached by Germany and the Jewish Claims Conference (JCC) on Wednesday. Some 1000 people in the Czech Republic are eligible for the compensation.
Germany and JCC agreed that Holocaust survivors from EU countries will get 175 to 200 euros per month as from October 1. Financial compensation will also be received by about 1500 west Europeans.
Kraus praised the inclusion of people from Central and East Europe into the compensation system.
"In the mid-1990s there was a tendency to close the issue for good and all. JCC and national representations of Jewish communities, however, pressed for the system to continue and for the compensation to be extended to include people from behind the former Iron Curtain," Kraus said.
JCC says the money from the German government is important for the survivors not only from the finacial, but also moral points of view.
JCC was founded in the 1950s by 23 Jewish organisations with the aim of securing compensation for Holocaust victims living outside Israel.
