Ukrainian Ministry of Justice Delegation Starts Educational Visit to Israel.

                  03.12.2008

The delegation of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine began an educational visit to Israel to study the organization and functioning of the free-of-charge legal aid system.
As UNIAN was told at the Ministry's press service, the system implemented in Israel is considered by experts to be one of the most successful examples of a complex and effective system of public defense and legal aid.
During the visit, Ukrainian specialists will study Israel legislature in the sphere of legal aid. They are planning to familiarize themselves with the system and routine work of the public defense and legal aid centers in Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv and Nazareth. Meetings with representatives of the Israeli judiciary are also on the agenda, in order to study the system of cooperation between courts and organizations for legal aid and public defense.
As reported previously, The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine is finishing its work on the draft law "On Free Legal Aid".
This draft law is being elaborated in pursuance of Article 59 of Ukrainian Constitution, the first part of which allocates the right of each person to legal aid. This fundamental law defines that in cases provided for by this law, aid shall be given free of charge. Development of this law draft is also a part of Ukraine's obligations as a member of the Council of Europe.
Currently the draft law is under examination at the Council of Europe.
