Scandal in the UN: General Assembly President Accuses Israel of Slander and Threats.
20.12.2008 General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann accused Israeli delegation of spreading malicious lies. Brockmann calls a lie the claims that he tried to prevent Israel's envoy Gabriela Shalev from giving a speech at the memorial assembly session marking the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which took place on December 10.
In a special statement read by his spokesman Enrique Yeves, General Assembly President denounced the actions of the Israelis as a "criminal act", "malignant gossip" and "slander".
Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann also claimed that as a result of slander spread by Israel he had received threats. According to his words, they are already being investigated by the relevant authorities.
An Israeli spokeswoman Mirit Cohen condemned d'Escoto's remarks as "outrageous and ridiculous". Following these events, Israeli Ambassador Gabriela Shalev cancelled the meeting with the General Assembly President, where it had been planned to discuss the incident.
Last month Reverend Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann in his speech on the Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People urged the international community to boycott Israel and impose economic sanctions on the Jewish state. He called the Palestinians "victims of Israel’s apartheid".
As a response, Gabriela Shalev filed an official complaint to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, emphasizing that Brockmann does not realize the boundaries of his functions as the UN General Assembly President and is demonstrating his inability to represent the interests of all the states- members of the United Nations Organization in an unbiased manner.
