                  Israel Hero Pardoned Posthumously

In a farewell gesture to a man who is considered a national hero in Israel, George Bush has granted posthumous forgiveness to the one who broke American law and provided Jews who participated in the Independence war with airplanes.
In the summer of 1948, Winters, a non-Jewish businessman from Miami who engaged in export of various produce, participated together with a number of people in transferring two re-equipped B-17 "Flying Fortress" airplanes to the Israeli armed forces. He was personally in the cockpit of one of the airplanes which he flew to Czechoslovakia, from where the two bombers from Miami and one more B-17 were flown to Israel. These "fortresses" were the only heavy bombers in the Israeli air force. It was later reported that the counterattacks from these bombers created the turnaround in Israel's favor.
Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir had issued a letter of commendation, recognizing his immense contribution to the survival of Israel as an independent state.
