European Parliament Approves Idea of World Jewish Satellite Channel
26.12.2008
Perspectives for creating a World Jewish Satellite Channel grow more and more realistic, as the idea of its creation has been supported by members of the European Parliament. The headquarters of the new channel are presumably to be located in Berlin.
A member of the Federation Council, former ex-President of the Russian Jewish Congress Vladimir Slutsker told the "Interfax" agency, the creation of an international Jewish channel is not an attempt to balance out the Islam channel "Al-Jazeera," founded in Katar.
At the same time, Slutsker refuted rumors about his alleged intents to run in the upcoming 2009 election to the post of President of the World Jewish Congress. "This information being spread by certain Russian media is completely false. I am not only not planning to run for the WJC presidency - I have never even considered such an option. The dissemination of this misinformation is tied to attempts to take over my initiative about the creation of a Jewish channel, an idea which I suggested about a year ago," underscored the ex-President of the RJC.
According to Slutsker, broadcasting on the new channel will be round-the-clock, at first - in English and for countries with the largest Jewish diasporas. Later the channel will broaden its geographic range. "Alongside the news program strips, we are planning to film thematic programs touching upon a wide range of subjects: religious and cultural, as well as political, economical, and social problems," Slutsker added.
