Israel Minister of Foreign Affairs Negotates With President of Egypt
26.12.2008
On the morning of 25th of December, Israel Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni arrived in Cairo, where she negotiated with the President of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak. The negotiations involved the situation in the Gaza sector and in the border districts of Israel.
The Egyptian president voiced an imperative request to the Israeli government, to open the post controls on the Gaza border, as to allow for humanitarian cargo, fuel, and provisions. The Foreign Affairs Minister, in turn, notified Mubarak of the government decision to begin a wide-scale anti-terrorist operation in the Gaza sector unless Palestinian terrorists cease rocket and mortar fire at Israeli territories.
Egypt is trying to convince Israel that such an operation could lead to a catastrophe. It would seem that Hosni Mubarak once again underscored the negative attitude his government has towards a possible military operation in the Gaza sector during the meeting.
The Cairo negotiations were held behind closed doors. No official statements were made for the press. Journalists and their cameras were only allowed to enter the negotiations room for a few moments, to record the fact that the meeting had been held. A concise summary of the content of the negotiations was provided by foreign-policy departments of both countries and by unofficial sources in the Israeli department.
