Neo-Nazis Obstruct Chanukah Celebration in Budapest
30.12.2008
Neo-Nazi protesters obstructed the celebration of Chanukah in Budapest. Members of the Hungarian Guards shouted anti-Semitic insults in the Heroes' Square near the place where several hundreds of mostly young people were lightning torches in honor of the holiday. The Chanukah program was organized by Balint-Haz Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Hungarian Jewish youth organizations.
The participants of the festival tried to reproduce the form of a khanukiyah with people and torches.
Local Rabbi Tomash Vero congratulated the people present the city square, who had come to create, he said, the greatest human Menorah. He asked God to bless all participants of the celebration and the protesters.
The extremists raised the red-and-white striped flag of the right pro-German anti-Semitic National Socialist Party. Its leader was Ferenc Salashi, the party was in power in Hungary from October 15, 1944 to January 1945, and sent thousands of Jews to death.
The police have identified some of the protesters.
