Jewish Tombstones Uncovered
Over 40 burials have been uncovered on an old Jewish cemetery in Stolbtsy (Minskaya Oblast), after clearing away a pile of garbage.
As the Jewish newspaper "Berega" reports, this part of the old Jewish cemetery had been returned to the local Jewish community by the authorities back in the spring of 2008. However, only now did the workers of the housing and communal services clear the returned territory. Tress and shrubs have been uprooted, and garbage has been disposed of.
As a result, over 40 old Jewish tombstones now see the light of day.
The local Jews have already created a catalogue and described all of the Jewish tombstones in the cemetery. In all, there were over 250.
There are plans being made for negotiations with the authorities for the privatization of the local joiner, which borders the Jewish cemetery. Eyewitness accounts say that in Jewish memorials were used for the foundation of the joinery, which was built in the 1970's.
