The Rudd Government has reinstated the Multicultural Advisory Council and appointed Jewish businessman Brian Schwartz to the new committee.
The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Senator Chris Evans appointed the 15-person committee last month, which will discuss social cohesion and ways to overcome racism and intolerance.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou will chair the council, which will hold its first meeting in February.
Schwartz said he was not sure what to expect, but was looking forward to meeting with the group, who all come from different cultural backgrounds.
"It is an amazingly diverse group of people," Schwartz said.
Originally from South Africa, Schwartz arrived in Australia 30 years ago. He is the chief executive of Investec Bank, deputy chair of Football Federation Australia, and a former trustee of the Australian Museum.
He is hoping to bring a number of positive attributes to council meetings.
"I will bring my listening skills," he said. "I will seek input from within the community and more broadly."
Schwartz said the first place he would seek input about the challenges posed by a multicultural society was around the Shabbat table.
"I'll get a lot of input from my daughter and from others around the table," he said.
