Holocaust survivors in Israel's South to get funds

BERLIN (JTA) - Traumatized Holocaust survivors living in southern Israel will receive assistance from the Claims Conference.
The New York-based Claims Conference is releasing more than $428,000 in special funds to assist those living in areas under missile attack from Gaza, the organization announced this week.
Included in the support package is funding for emergency life buttons that wearers use to request emergency medical assistance; funds for home modification and security, such as new shatter-proof windows in nursing homes and hospital emergency rooms; and funds for counseling and social programs, including Amcha, the National Israeli Center for Psychological Support of Nazi Victims.
Nearly 300 Holocaust survivors live in three nursing homes in the southern cities of Ashdod, Beersheba and Gadera, according to the statement.
For several years the Claims Conference has provided extra assistance to survivors living under stress in southern Israeli communities. A new Amcha branch opened in Sderot in 2008 with Claims Conference funding. Hunger relief programs also are being boosted, the statement said.
