Bolivia Breaks Off Diplomatic Relations with Israel

Bolivian President Evo Morales announced at a meeting with foreign diplomats at the government palace in La Paz that Bolivia is breaking off diplomatic relations with Israel over "the sufferings of civilians" in Gaza. Morales also said that in the nearest future his country will demand of the International Court in Hague to accuse the Head of caretaker government Ehud Olmert and top Israeli military and political leaders "of military crimes."
The Indian Morales, former shepherd and coca leaves lover, came under the influence of anti-Israeli forces three years ago when he was elected to the presidency. Under his leadership, Bolivia is conducting a clearly anti-American policy, supplants foreign capital from its territory, and is going through a period of reforms, during which the old ruling elites lose key positions.
This position on anti-terrorist operation in the Gaza Strip is shared by President of the neighboring Venezuela Hugo Chavez. The severance of diplomatic relations between Israel and Venezuela was announced last week. Chavez expelled the Israeli ambassador and the whole staff of the diplomatic mission from the country.
Jerusalem was not surprised by Morales’s actions. However, according to the Israeli MFA Press Secretary, there have been no official notes from Bolivia until last night.
