20.01.2009
In Kaliningrad, a meeting of the Council for Culture of the Governor of the Kaliningrad region took place. The first issue discussed was the installation of a monument to victims of the Holocaust not far from the "Anna" mine in the Yantarny village on the Baltic Sea shore. The draft was adopted unanimously, and the governor of the Kaliningrad region Georgy Boos also approved of the monument construction.
The memorial was developed by well-known Israeli architect Frank Meisler, who miraculously survived the Holocaust as a child. The monument occupies the central position in the complex. It reflects the hands of men, women and children with camp numbers facing the sky.
The Chief Rabbi of Kaliningrad Region David Shvedik and a WWII veteran, the1 former ghetto prisoner Yakov Sukhovolsky were invited to the Council session.
