20.01.2009
The "Citadel's Commissar" exhibition is now open in the exhibition hall at the Holmsk gate of the "Heroic Brest Fortress" memorial complex.
It is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of birth of one of the leaders of the Brest Fortress Defence in June-July 1941, Deputy Commander on political issues of 84th Rifle Regiment, a Jew Yefim Fomin.
In 1957, Y. Fomin was awarded with the order of Lenin (posthumously). Streets in Brest, Minsk, Pskov, Liozno are named after him.
As the Chairman of "Brisk" Jewish social organization of Brest, Boris Brook explained to the Agency of Jewish News, such an event in honour of the anniversary of the fortress defender is being conducted1 for the first time. "I would like to express my gratitude for this to the staff of the Museum," said B. Brooke.
The exhibition presents some 100 displays. These are photographs, including the family archives of Yefim Fomin, pictures of the castle after the fighting in 1941, made by German soldiers, as well as documents related to the life of Y. Fomin, memories of him by the other defenders of the fortress.
"We divided the exhibition into three parts," said the author of the exhibition, senior researcher at the Memorial Alexander Korkotadze during the opening ceremony. "The first section contains the life of Yefim Fomin before 1941 and the establishment of his character, the second section - the Commissar's heroic participation in the defense of the Brest Fortress and death, the third part commemorates his memory. I wish to note that almost one third of the exhibits are being displayed for the first time."
On January 12, in Brest city central Library a memory evening of Y. Fomin took place, and another event was held on January 16 at the memorial complex "Heroic Brest Fortress."
The latter was attended by Fomin's grandchild and great-grandchild, who currently live in Kiev.
As noted by A. Korkotadze, in 2009 in Belarus and Ukraine the second edition of the book "Man of the Legend," written by son of the legendary Commissar Juriy Fomin, will be published.
