Azerbaijan Jews Alarmed at Growing Threats
03.02.2009
Azerbaijan Jews are concerned about growing threats. Officers of Azerbaijan's Ministry of National Security (MNS) have neutralized another radical Islamist terrorist group operating on the Republic's territory.
According to the information received by the JNA in the MNS public relations department, about 20 members of the terrorist group headed by Azer Misirkhanov, a native of the republic, alias Abdullah, were detained as a result of a special operation executed in January 2009.
Submachine guns, pistols, shoulder-launchers, explosive devices, as well as a large quantity of ammunition were confiscated from the terrorists. A large consignment of weapons and explosive devices had been delivered by the group members to Azerbaijan from abroad.
Aims of the radical Islamic group were the following: organization of several high-profile terrorist attacks in the republic, including blowing up the oil-trunk pipeline Baku-Novorossiysk, launching armed attacks against the country's citizens and, finally, destabilizing the political situation in Azerbaijan.
The representatives of Jewish communities of Azerbaijan informed the JNA that the efficient counter-terrorism actions of the republic's MNS deserve unconditional approval.
"However, the growth in the number of terrorist groups operating in Azerbaijan and their activity naturally arouse concern. Terrorist attacks in Baku last summer, new terrorist threats, weapon caches that are being uncovered by the law-enforcement authorities throughout the republic, anti-Semitic orgies held by Islamists in the settlement of Nardaran, near Baku - all of this logically concerns us," as was emphasized to the JNA in the Jewish communities of Azerbaijan.
