Israeli retaliatory attack targets Hamas outpost
12.02.2009
JERUSALEM (JTA) - Israel's Air Force attacked a Hamas outpost in southern Gaza.
The attack early Thursday morning was in retaliation for the barrage of Kassam rockets, mortar shells and grad missiles fired at Israel in recent days, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces spokesperson's office.
At least three mortar shells were fired into southern Israel from Gaza on Wednesday and a Kassam that landed near Sderot shortly before Israel's polls closed on Tuesday. Over 40 rockets and mortar shells have been fired from Gaza into Israel since Israel and Hamas each declared a cease-fire in mid-January.
"As the sole authority in the Gaza Strip, Hamas bears full responsibility for all terror activities originating within its area of control," the statement said.
