Number of job seekers in Israel jumped by 3.8% in January

The number of job seekers in Israel rose to 218.5 thousand in January, an increase of 3.8 percent from the previous month, according to employment service data.
In December 2008, the number of job seekers was 208.1 thousand. The number of job seekers recorded in January 2008 was 191.2 thousand.
The number of new job seekers recorded in January 2009 was 27.6 thousand, 19,716 of them newly unemployed.
An analysis of the data reveals a new trend in unemployment figures. After four years in which unemployment has been decreasing - at an average monthly rate of 0.1 percent in 2004, 0.3 percent in 2005, and 0.7 percent in 2006 and 2007 - in April 2008 the trend reversed, and since then unemployment numbers have been increasing at a monthly average of 1.3 percent.
Cumulative unemployment figures have increased by 12.9 percent within the past 10 months.
