Tajikistan Community Cannot Agree to Transfer of the Synagogue
17.02.2009
The Jewish community of Tajikistan is concerned about the fate of the only synagogue in the Republic, which, according to a new master plan for the development of the city of Dushanbe, is to be demolished. In June 2004, the Chief Rabbi of Central Asia, Abe Dovid Gurevich, who visited Tajikistan, and the Tajikistan capital Mayor Mahmadsaid Ubaydulloev identified the place for the construction of the new synagogue: of all the suggested places of the Jewish community chose the area near the embankment of the river. However, members of the Jewish community are still trying to draw public attention to this issue.
In Tajikistan, nearly three hundred and fifty Jews are registered, but not all of them are believers and attend synagogue. Today Dushanbe synagogue is in a deplorable state. The one-storey house, which looks like a ramshackle barrack, is situated among the ruins and does not resemble a place of worship. The only thing indicating the former significance of the Jewish synagogue is a six-pointed star on the gate.
