Rome remembers Nazi raid on Jewish quarter

                  17.10.2010

Rome marked the 67th anniversary of a round-up of more than 1,000 Jews on a day remembered as "Black Saturday", which gutted the once-bustling community of the Italian capital''s historic Jewish quarter.
Jewish community leaders and local city officials attended the torch-lit procession in the "ghetto" area on the banks of the River Tiber, which was established in the 16th century and where Rome''s main synagogue is located.
On that Saturday in 1943, Nazi troops raided the ghetto and rounded up more than 1,000 Roman Jews. Only 16 of them made it back alive after World War II.
The event was organised by the Jewish community in Rome and the Sant''Egidio community, a Catholic group involved in global pacifist initiatives.
