Williamson apology over Holocaust remarks rejected

Catholic and Jewish leaders in Germany have sharply rejected the apology by the British Holocaust-denying bishop Richard Williamson. In his "thoroughly bungled" statement, Williamson "unfortunately takes nothing back," Dieter Graumann, vice-president of the Central Council for Jews in Germany, told the 'Handelsblatt'newspaper. Williamson's apology, made public on Thursday, "leads one to the conclusion that he still believes in the Holocaust-denial," Graumann said. The vice president of the Central Council of German Catholics, Hans-Joachim Meyer, also rejected Williamson's statement, telling the 'Tagesspiegel' newspaper that it was "in no way satisfactory."
In a letter to the Vatican, Williamson apologized to those he offended with his remarks but stopped short of withdrawing the remarks. "Observing these consequences I can truthfully say that I regret having made such remarks," said Williamson in the letter made public a day after his return to Britain from Argentina. "If I had known beforehand the full harm and hurt to which they would give rise, especially to the Church, but also to survivors and relatives of victims of injustice under the Third Reich, I would not have made them," he wrote.
