The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, said she was "deeply saddened" by the forest fires in northern Israel.
"On behalf of the EU, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the victims, and to the Israeli authorities. My thoughts are with them during this terrible time and Israel can count on our support at this difficult moment," she said in a statement on Friday.
She added, "the EU and our member states have responded to this natural disaster with immediate and coordinated assistance to support Israel in combating the ravaging fires. We will continue to do whatever we can to help Israel to tackle this disaster."
