Another Caracas synagogue attacked
02.03.2009
Another synagogue in the Venezuelan capital Caracas has been attacked. Explosives were thrown from a motorbike at the walls of the Orthodox Beit Shmuel synagogue, damaging windows and a car. No injuries were reported. It was the second such attack this year on a Jewish site in Caracas. Eleven people, including eight policemen, are under arrest for vandalizing another synagogue in Caracas last month. In that attack, the walls were painted with anti-Semitic slogans, religious objects were damaged and a database listing Venezuela's Jews was stolen.
The president of the Latin American Jewish Congress, Jack Terpins, called on Venezuela to show energetic action following the recent attack against the Beth Shmuel synagogue in Caracas. In a statement, Terpins called on the government of president Hugo Chávez "to guarantee the security of all synagogues" in the country.
