Latvia Bans March of SS Legionaries
11.03.2009
The Latvian Government has banned the traditional march of Latvian veterans of SS units. The authorities fear that the planned march on March 16 will entail new disorders, such as those that swept through the city on January 13.
Many people in Latvia consider the Legionnaires to be fighters for the independence of the country, turning a blind eye to the crimes committed by the Latvians in Nazi uniforms. Rallies of veterans traditionally cause retaliatory actions of the Russian-speaking community.
The winter riots, during which protestors against the sharp decline in living standards destroyed stores and burned police vehicles, were the most severe since 1991.
