The memory of 33 Jewish children killed at the beginning of German occupation in 1941, will be perpetuated in the Estonian city of Piarnu. The Jewish community of Estonia reported on Tuesday that collection of donations has already started.
The Jewish community of Piarnu has taken the initiative to perpetuate the memory of the murdered Jewish children by constructing a monument at Piarnu cemetery Alevi-2 in the part with Jewish burial places. The monument will have the carved names and birth dates of all 33 children on it, as well as the date of their death.
According to the community’s data, 33 Jewish children between the ages of 1 to 17 years old were killed by fascists in Piarnu in November 1941. Their bodies are buried in the Rae forest. Historians suggest that the children were poisoned.
Donations are already coming from both international Jewish organizations and individuals. The memorial is planned to be installed this autumn.
