17.03.2009
A memorial has been erected in Dnepropetrovsk in honor of Rabbi Levi-Yitzhak Shneerson, father of the head of our generation, Lyubavichesky Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Shneerson. Rabbi Levi-Yitzhak from 1909 to 1939 was the Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk-Yekaterynoslav.
The memorial plaque was placed on the house where Levi-Yitzhak had lived in the years 1934 - 1039, and where he was arrested on the night of March 29 by the agents of the NKVD. In the foyer of the building, a permanent memorial display is now situated.
The leadership of the business center "Steps" at Barrikadnaya Street decided to perpetuate the memory of the great religious leader of Dnepropetrovsk by carefully restoring the facade of a two-storey building according to the historical documents and images, thus saving it for the descendants. Now it is a part of a modern business complex, symbolizing the unity of past, present and future.
At the initiative of the business center leadership, which was supported by the Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk and Dnepropetrovsk region Shmuel Kaminetsky, a memorial plaque with text in Ukrainian and Hebrew was made.
The author of the architectural design of the building restoration, memorial plaque and the exposition is a well-known Dnepropetrovsk architect Alexander Sorin.
The events attracted much attention of Dnepropetrovsk and Ukrainian mass media, who called it "an important step in the restoration of historical truth and historical memory of Dnepropetrovsk, the preservation of its cultural and spiritual heritage and the recognition of the contribution of the Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk-Yekaterynoslav Levi-Yitzhak Shneerson into the development of spirituality in Ukraine and worldwide."
