                  Center for Jewish Studies Opened in Zhytomyr

                  On March 20, 2009, Center for Jewish Studies of the National University named after Ivan Franko, has been opened. According to the decision of the Acadenuc Council of the university, Center for Jewish Studies will be created on the base of the history department.
                  The purpose of creating a Center for Jewish Studies, according to its supervisor Natalia Rudnitskaya, is the coordination of research programs connected to the Jewish theme, the organizations of academic and practical conferences, as well as discussions, on the questions of the history and culture of Ukrainian Jews, the publication of the academic journal "Jews of Ukraine: History and Modernity," where academic articles in Ukrainian, Russian, English and Polish will be published. The first event of the Center will be the international academic conference "Jews of Volyn: History and Modernity." Over a hundred scholars, experts, public figures, and students from Russia, Ukraine and Poland are to take part in the work of the conference. Financial help to organize the conference was given by the Jewish Fund of Ukraine.
