Day of Israeli Culture in Bendery

                  24.03.2009

Day of Israeli Culture in Bendery

A "Day of Israeli culture" took place in the Transnistrian city of Bendery. Heads of Israeli missions in Moldova participated.
On March 22, a large group from Chisinau, consisting of the First Secretary of the embassy of Israel to Moldova Stav Nezhinsky, employees of the Israeli cultural centre, Head of the local mission of JAFI Paula Lam-Khaim, JAFI program coordinators, Director of the "Dor Le Dor" Charitable Foundation Sofia Gitenstein, as well as journalists of the Jewish media, visited the Jewish community of Bendery.
The Day of Israeli Culture was marked with the speeches by the Heads of Israeli missions and was dedicated to the numerous examples of cultural, political, economic connections of the two countries.
Because the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic is in a sense, divorced from life in Chisinau, the representatives of the community of Bendery had a lot of questions to the guests. The organizer of the meeting, Deputy Chairman of the community Vladimir Igelnik, hardly managed to "regulate" the flow of these questions.
The community was interested in the modern life of ordinary Israelis and the outcome of the recent Israeli elections, all aspects of new JAFI programs, especially those for youth, the near-term prospects for the abolition of the visa regime for Moldovan citizens wishing to visit Israel, which were spoken about recently by the Ambassador of Israel to Moldova Abraham Sharon, and much more.
Some members of the community were asking personal questions, as well, in connection with being in the process of filing related documents.
In conclusion of the trip, the representatives of the Jewish media managed to meet with the gabay of Bendery Chabad-Lyubavich Synagogue, which at the beginning of March suffered from the attack, was desecrated and robbed.
But the leader of the "Bendery Jewish synagogue and the community" public organization Mikhail Tulchinsky, unfortunately, could say nothing new: it has been three weeks, and the criminals still have not been found.
And the synagogue is still in a horrible condition, additionally threatened by the city construction sites.
