Argentine president compares Malvinas occupation to Palestinians
02.04.2009
BUENOS AIRES (JTA) - The Argentine president's recent comments comparing the British occupation of the Malvinas Islands with Israel and the Palestinians has angered the country's Jewish leaders and Israeli officials.
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on Tuesday compared the British occupation in the Malvinas Islands, also known as the Falkland Islands, with the situation of the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
During the II South American and Arab Countries Presidents Summit held in Qatar, the Argentine president said that Britain has "an inadmissible colonial enclave" in the Argentine islands and should fulfill a United Nations resolution to renegotiate the situation. In addition, she criticized "the unfulfilled United Nations resolution regarding the recognition of a Palestine state and the Middle East conflict."
"The Malvinas and the Palestinian situations are terrible examples of lack of accomplishment of measures stated by the international organs," said Fernandez de Kirchner.
Local Jewish political umbrella president, Aldo Donzis, said: "I believe it is very confusing to equate these two different situations, comparing a colonial situation such as the British in Malvinas with Israel that does not occupy an inch of Palestine territory, in Gaza or in the West Bank."
