Shimon Peres warns of military strike against Iran if diplomacy fails
14.04.2009
Israeli president Shimon Peres has warned that military action against Iran would still be needed if US president Barack Obama's new diplomatic initiative fails to stop its nuclear program. Peres said he hoped Obama's call for dialogue with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would be heeded, but warned that if talks do not soften Ahmadinejad's approach, "we will strike him." The Obama administration announced last week that it would take part in talks between a group of countries and Iran over its nuclear program.
Last week, Ahmadinejad opened Iran's first plant for producing nuclear fuel, sparking new fears that the Islamic Republic may be closer than ever to acquiring an atomic bomb. The Iranian leader celebrated the breakthrough, saying that Iranian scientists had tested two new types of enrichment centrifuges with a higher capacity for producing uranium.
