Obama to deliver Holocaust memorial address
17.04.2009
President Barack Obama will mark Holocaust remembrance this year with an address at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
The president's speech on April 23 will address the museum's theme for this year's commemorations: "Never Again: What You Do Matters."
Fred Zeidman, the museum's chairman, said the institution was "honored" by Obama's participation.
"At this critical moment, with hatred and anti-Semitism on the rise in so many parts of the world, and genocide still a reality, we are reminded of the continued relevance of the Holocaust and the urgency of its lessons," Zeidman said in a statement Wednesday. “What the Holocaust teaches us with such moral clarity is the power of the individual and the responsibility we all have to not stand silent in the face of injustice."
The other featured speaker will be Elie Wisel, the museum’s founding chairman and a Holocaust memoirist.
The ceremony this year will take place two days after Jewish communities worldwide commemorate Yom HaShoah.
