Thousands of people attended the opening of a new Holocaust museum in suburban Chicago on Sunday, with videotaped remarks by US President Barack Obama kicking off the event.
Obama said that when school children visit the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, they will learn there is no greater obligation than to confront acts of inhumanity.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn also spoke at the Sunday opening of the $45 million, 65,000 square-foot (20,000 meter) facility. Former President Bill Clinton was to give the keynote speech.
The new museum is considered the largest of its kind in the Midwest. It houses more than 2,000 Holocaust survivor testimonies.
