Contribution of Jewish Mathematicians to Moldavian Science Recognized

During the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Institute of Math and Computer Science of the Academy of Sciences of Moldavia, its leaders noted the significant scientific contribution of Jewish mathematicans.
On this celebratory day, the stands of the Institute were filled with the many works of its staff, photos from years past, and the hall of fame of governmental prize laureates.
Among those who were the teachers of the current generation of Moldavian mathematicians were, at different times, D.L. Pikus and I.A. Itskovich, Idel Bronstein (currently a professor at the Pennsylvanian University, USA), and others.
During the celebratory gathering, the merits of a number of major scientists, who created whole mathematical schools of thought in Moldavia, were especially noted. The following schools received world recognition: algebra, led by the academic Andrunakievich; differential equations, led by Sibirsky; and functional analysis, led by Gochberg.
In 1996, the prominent mathematician Israel Gochberg, who emigrated during the 1970's aliyah wave, was restored in his rights as a corresponding member of the Moldavian Academy of Sciences. He was the research supervisor of many PhD's, including leading Moldavian mathematicians, such as A.S. Markus, I.A. Feldman, A.A. Sementsul, and around 30 candidates of science, including L.S. Goldstein, Jurgen Laiterer, Georg M. Heinig, V.A. Zolotarevsky, and others.
