US Ambassador: Jackson-Vanik Amendment Should be Cancelled for Russia

The Jackson-Vanik Amendment, which precludes the regime of most favourable trade conditions with Russia, should be abolished. The statement was made on Monday on the Ekho Moskvy radio station by the U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle.
At the time the amendment was adopted, it was to put pressure on the Soviet Union, which prevented the emigration of Jews. This state has ceased to exist a long time ago. The Jewish question no longer exists, but the absurd amendment is still in action. The Ambassador also expressed his support for the soonest acceptance of Russia into the World Trade Organization.
