Romanian Anti-Semitism Unnoticed
07.05.2009
The Centre Against Anti-Semitism (SMA) accuses Romanian authorities of being reluctant to admit the presence of anti-Semitic motives in crimes against Jewish objects.
In recent years, acts of vandalism against Jewish cemeteries have been most often observed. The last incident of this kind happened on 14 April this year when 24 Jewish graves were destroyed by unknown vandals. The Centre notes that the authorities refer such crimes to domestic hooliganism and refuse to classify them as anti-Semitic. Necessary changes in the legislative field do not take place owing to this approach, and the police do not really search for offenders.
"Acts of desecration of Jewish graves will not cease till the Romanian authorities cardinally change their approach towards the problem of anti-Semitism," the statement published by the Centre Against Anti-Semitism reads.
