Pope Benedict XVI ends visit to Holy Land in Jerusalem
15.05.2009
Pope Benedict XVI ended his visit to the Middle East on Friday in Jerusalem with a visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which tradition holds marks the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection. On Thursday, the pope met with Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Nazareth. The PM said he had urged Benedict to speak out against the anti-Israel rhetoric from Iran's president Ahmadinejad.
"I asked him, as a moral figure, to make his voice heard loud and continuously against the declarations coming from Iran of their intention to destroy Israel," Netanyahu told reporters after the meeting. "I told him it cannot be that at the beginning of the 21st century there is a state which says it is going to destroy the Jewish state, there is no aggressive voice being heard condemning this." Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said the talks "centered on how the peace process can be advanced.".
