Dialogue with Iran is the best way'

Dialogue with Iran is considered by the IDF as the most desirable way to prevent the Islamic Republic from attaining nuclear weapons, though there is only a small chance that the current dialogue between Washington and Teheran will actually succeed in that goal, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi said on Tuesday.
Speaking to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Ashkenazi stressed the necessity of preventing nuclear weapons from Iran which would "destabilize the entire Middle East."
"It is the IDF's duty to prepare all of the options on the Iranian front, and we are doing so," he said.
"A dialogue between Iran and the US is currently taking place, and I doubt it will yield results, but as far as the IDF is also concerned, this is the desirable way to stop the Iranian nuclear project," Ashkenazi said.
Commenting on the upcoming Lebanese elections, the army chief warned of "a risk that Lebanon will succumb to the radical axis" if Hizbullah garners a substantial vote.
On the Egyptian front, Ashkenazi praised Cairo's anti-smuggling efforts, noting "the increase in the efficiency of Egyptian actions" which delays smuggling, but does not totally prevent it.
"Peace with Egypt is an important strategic asset, and I, along with the rest of the IDF, have a good dialogue with the Egyptians," Ashkenazi added.
